Below you will see the latest update on the 2009 Winkie Convention. I am hoping to make it one of the most entertaining and best attended Oz conventions in many years. So please spread the word, let me know if you'd like to help, and most importantly, come join us this summer in Pacific Grove! For the first time too an Oz Convention has its own Facebook and MySpace pages! Updates, and special information and previews will be appearing on each website in the coming months. Click Here for Printable REGISTRATION FORMS It's a hundred years since Dorothy Gale, Button-Bright, Polychrome, and the Shaggy Man journeyed down THE ROAD TO OZ to attend Princess Ozma's Royal Birthday Party! And you are cordially invited to come celebrate the centennial of THE ROAD TO OZ. Come join us for an in-depth presentation on L. Frank Baum's 1909 fairytale ..THE ROAD TO OZ... Is the book a plotless and pointless mess or a wonderfully crafted "perfect" Oz book? Perhaps it's both! We will also take a close-up look at John R. Neill's extraordinary illustrations for THE ROAD TO OZ - surely Neill's most beautiful Oz work. And you can see a ten-minute ballet based on the early chapters of the book. Award-winning Oz author and illustrator Eric Shanower will talk about his new Oz Series from Marvel Comics. L. Frank Baum Scholar, Michael O. Riley will present an in-depth look at his beautiful and collectible Pamami Press L. Frank Baum titles. I went for 5 years straight from 1995 - 1999 but haven't been since. I am thinking about making a return this summer and hope i haven't missed out ... Thanks, Freddy

Peter Hanff will be sending out the flyer very soon. If you are planning on attending an Oz con for the first time (or as is the case with Freddy) making a return after many years away. THIS is the year to do it! I am going all out at trying to bring in a good crowd and I am especially working on nudging some long absent attendees into attending. It will be a very good convention I believe. If you have access to MySpace or Facebook (see announcemnt above) you can log in and see updates, and in the coming weeks some special pre-conference features about the Winkie Con. If you are indeed interested in attending please contact Peter Hanff, the Winkie Registrar, and let him know you'd like more information. (sorry for that MGM bit) Just like Eric Shanower, "the Road to Oz" was one of the Original Oz Books I read growing up - with the same edition of "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" (didn't read the books in proper order at that time, but that usually happens with me and some fantasy series). Like I said . . . LOVED the book and still do!! HAPPY HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY, you golden rainbow-coloured magical "ROAD to Oz"!!!

Frank Baum called THE ROAD TO OZ has agreed to join us at the Winkie Convention. I was hoping we could make this happen - but it didn't happen soon enough to make it into the Winkie Flyer. In addition to her Baumian ROAD TO OZ book, Ms. Krull is the author of many other pictures books including: the acclaimed kid's biography of HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, and her newest book, FARTISTE! Ms. Krull will be signing books during the WINKIE reception on Friday afternoon and speaking on Friday evening. The Winkie Convention has arranged for books to be available for purchase at the convention (or you may bring your own copy of course.) Eric Shanower and I were at Wondercon in San Francisco this last weekend. - about 39,000 people showed up. Many folks who stopped by the table were very interested in discovering that there was an Oz convention happening this summer right down the coast in Pacific Grove. The point of this story is publicity, publicity, publicity! If you plan on attending WINKIES this year you should get your reservations in ASAP! I am working very hard to get this WINKIE con sold-out. So don't dawdle and find yourself having to stay at the Motel 7 on Yip Mountain! Best Winkie Wishes! David Maxine

It promises to be a good crowd, too. Our Registrar, Peter Hanff, must give an initial headcount to the Convention Center by April 10th and release a certain portion of "unsold" rooms. So if you are planning (or seriously hoping) to attend, and you have NOT sent in your reservation, please do so in the next few days - or at a minimum contact the Registrar by phone or e-mail and let him know you PLAN to attend so he can hold a room for you. I do plan to make it to one or two of the oz festivals later on this year...so we'll see what happens. At this rate we may well top the 50th Anniversary of the Club convention back in 2007! The downside of this news is that our rooms at Asilomar Conference Center are now sold-out. However, there are still other motels, lodges, and B&B rooms available nearby (even in easy walking distance!) and there is a Motel 6 and a Youth Hostel, too, for those watching their dollars (and who isn't!). So don't delay! Come to Winkies and meet Kathleen Krull (author of the new children's bio of LFB) Be the first to see the new deluze edition of QUEER VISITORS FROM OZ which debuts at Winkies this year!
